Message are now worth 15 times or more of their original value. But the simple fact that the SMZ was a 25th Anniversary edition car and was a $16K package over a standard 300ZX with a lot of publicity in magazines should make it more valuable 20+ years down the road. That was my point. And I'm pretty sure I'm right from what I've seen already. It should only get better 20 years down the road when guys like me go through their midlife crisis and need to have their boyhood dream cars. :-) There's much more out there than this web site as far as a market for such a car. The car was definitely more than just a badged car with the Stillen body kit, Stillen intake, Stillen catback exhaust, AVS wheels which were $3K+ back then, Eibach springs, Skyline brakes, carbon fiber interior, etc. One could argue it had WAY more options than an old Hemi car. Again, what really made the Hemi cars special? It was just the engine because of it's rarity. The SMZ actually offered a lot more than that. Again, I'm not saying an SMZ will be worth anywhere near that amount any day, but this was just to combat your comment on a "half-hearted" attempt to create a collector's car. There isn't one of those old cars that offered all of what the SMZ is off the showroom floor. You're talking about a 40% increase in price with the Stillen options. You never got that with the old muscle cars.

My dad told me that many of the engine options back then cost just a few hundred bucks. It was a different time. It was different technology. But originality still remains a big determining factor of value.

Again, I'm not saying the car will be worth a fortune ever. But it will be worth quite a bit more than a standard twin turbo and the gap will only get larger as the years go on. The Japanese supercars are going to be in big demand 20 years from now. That's just my opinion. The market has shifted to import vehicles in this country and the Japanese supercars of the 90's really started the high power imports trend. They will be in great demand in the future with limited supply of great examples.
